1973 Eisenhower Tunnel Grand Opening Trek Invitation
In this newsletter: Early Eisenhower Tunnel ephemera, more 35mm slide photos, and current CO travel deals.
This 1973 invitation was added to the archives this week, along with a separate booklet detailing the tunnel’s initial construction.
Officially, the tunnel is now known as the Eisenhower–Edwin C. Johnson Memorial Tunnel. The first bore to open was the Eisenhower Tunnel, which now contains the westbound lanes of Interstate 70. This opened on March 8, 1973. The second tunnel, the eastbound bore, opened in 1979.
Construction Booklet
The booklet was NOT made for the grand opening. That had already taken place by the time this was published. This was likely published later in 1973.

You can flip through every page of the booklet here: Eisenhower Tunnel Construction Booklet.
More Old Slide Photos
There is ongoing work for the archives that involves photographing the slides which have already been scanned and cataloged…
On the left, the Eisenhower Tunnel in 1975, when it was still just one tunnel bore and a single lane in each direction. On the right, the old Mount Evans Crest House is shown in a massively red-shifted slide. The color was surprisingly easy to correct with some digital trickery.
