The featured video above is cut from the longer film which can be seen below. Many of you will recognize that section of Interstate 70 west of Denver. The longer version includes: Berthoud Pass footage, Highway 6, downtown Grand Junction, and trains through Glenwood Canyon. You can also view the full version on YouTube, or in the archives here.
This is the third of four film reels that came together in this group. Why buy them? The initial purpose of the archives was to document the history of the Continental Divide signs in Colorado. These films were purchased to try and find motion footage of the signs so that it could be added to this collection.

Lost in the mail - 1948 Pikes Peak Toll Road Ticket
This ticket never quite made it to the archives. This is unfortunate, because it appears to be a rare ticket. These tickets may have only been used for a short period of time in 1948, when the City of Colorado Springs took over management of the Pikes Peak Auto Highway. New tickets were in use by 1949.
This ticket has been added to the website regardless of the fact that it didn’t make it here. See more info and photos of this one on its permanent page within the archives here.
This next ticket is not included in the archives yet, partially because it is not actually from Colorado.
The National Road - A Very Distant Relative to the Berthoud Pass Toll Road
1,500 miles away from Berthoud Pass, and several decades before the pass was built, the National Road was built between Cumberland, Maryland and the Ohio River. Much of this road would eventually become US Highway 40, which is the modern highway that traverses over Berthoud Pass.
The National Road was built between 1811 and 1834, and this was the first federally funded road in US history (ref). Berthoud Pass was not completed until 1874. You can see the in-depth Berthoud Pass construction timeline here.
